Follow Through is Key!

I think it's important to align the things that you reward yourself with with who you want to become. So, for me, it's like, man, I've done really well this week, I'm gonna take more time off. I actually work about 30, 35 hours a week. I'm not a workaholic, I practice what I preach.
I do love what I do, though. I mean when I'm here I am here. But when I'm out, I'm out. And so, for me, it's all about a less time at work. My very first real job, I was working with my dad in a plumbing company for years, it was the family business, like, I got paid actually really well.
But when I actually had to go and interview outside of, you know, Southern California, and had a job that paid me a salary, had benefits and all those other bells and whistles, I sat down with my financial advising, you know, agent there and he said, Hey, Travis, what would you like? I'm like, I'm newlywed. This would be awesome to have less time at work and if I can be super productive, I want every Friday off for a month. And he's like, done.
You hit this goal, you're gonna help me to go to Hawaii so I'm gonna have a whole week off, I'm gonna give you every Friday off. Well, so here's the kicker. I hit that goal in like a week and because I hit that in a week, he did something that I will never do and that is he pulled that back. He's like, mmmmm, that was too easy. I'm gonna make this a little bit harder. I'm like, no way, man.
You said, you told me, I get every Friday off. And so, I started taking those Fridays off, and that became a rub for us both. But the thing is, I was super productive, and I showed him that I was more productive than he was during the time that he was working there and then we wouldn't reward me. So, I would say, managers, business owners, whoever out there, if you're trying to, you know, motivate your team, the psychology behind this is, that relationship is crucial.
Because if you don't follow through and you dangle a carrot and you don't give it, be prepared, just like any parent knows, if you're not doing it right, you're not giving that carrot when you've suggested it, it's gonna be a problem.
